Here at 'The Beard Struggle' we are constantly searching for new and improved methods when it comes to beard care. From beard wash, oils and tonics, to smartly crafted beard combs, tees and shapers. Today I wanted to give you a basic guide to beard care with a few handy pointers in order to help maintain your glorious beard-mane. So, here is what every bearded fellow should have...
STOCK UP ON BEARD SHAMPOO & CONDITIONERS!
First up you're going to need to keep that facial forest of yours nice and clean. And to do so you're going to want to use some shampoo and/or conditioner. Now, I've voiced in previous blog posts the importance of only using select beard shampoos that are specifically designed for using on beards. The main reason for this being is the chemicals used within standard hair shampoos are a different balance in comparison to beard shampoo. In turn you run a high risk of damaging your beards hair by using harsh chemicals that may strip your beard of their essential oils, which could do you more harm than good long term.
BEARD COMBS ARE A PLENTY!
Combing through your beard will help keep your facial gruff tangle free whilst keeping any knots at bay. It should already be an important part of your daily grooming routine. It is however very important to use the correct tools for the job at hand. I use several beard combs around the home, I have a wide toothed plastic comb for using in the shower, a brush which works a charm and a 'TBS' hand crafted comb (pictured above!) which I carry with me on my day to day commutes around the globe. On average you should comb your beard only a small handful of times a day, as over-combing can cause unneeded pulling which may cause damage like split ends. And using a comb that isn't likely to snag your beard off is always a plus as well.
BEARD OILS AND TONICS ARE ESSENTIAL!
I cannot express the importance of using beard oils/balms each and every day enough. Without using these essential oils it'll only be a matter of time before you'll begin to notice the knock on effects of not doing so. Your facial hair will begin to dry out, making each hair weak and brittle to the touch. This heightens your chances of causing split ends within your beard, which isn't a whole lot of fun for anybody.
A TRUSTY SET OF BEARD SCISSORS MIGHT COME IN HANDY!
Worry not my fellow bearded folks, I'm not suggesting we all go crazy and take a pair of sharp scissors to our marvelous beards! But if you're going to be maintaining your beards style yourself at home it might be handy to purchase some trusty barber shop scissors rather than using the kitchen scissors. I used to 'DIY' my beard grooming game, but have recently opted out of doing so following a slight hiccup on my part shall we say. But if you have the confidence to trim and shape your beard yourself then they're an absolute must!
