I am not usually one for labels. The main reason for this being is they tend to stick quickly and stay around forever, becoming almost impossible to ever shake off forever more.
Being a proud furry faced individual, I've heard more than my fair share of labels and stereotypes over the year. From 'poopy beard face' to 'following a trend' and just about everything in between.
Labels are often dished out cold, usually without any real fact or sensible theory behind them to back up truth to the matter. Labelling all of us beardsmen as following a 'fashion trend' does piss me off a little, I am not going to lie. But I'm also not too ignorant to understand as to why such sentences can, and usually stick.
Now, as we are over a quarter of the way into the year that is 2017, our face fuzz has made the headlines once again for being 'trendy', 'cool' and a part of our 'fashion style'. Now, usually I would come out swinging from the rafters and defend our mutton chops vigorously, slandering such accusations. but come to think of it, in some cases there seems to be a high element of truth to such labels to be given in the first place. Let me explain...
Now, I'm not suggesting every man who chooses to sprout out a beard is following the crowd, or trying to be extra trendy. Of course this doesn't apply to anyone and everyone. But the stubble beard has become very popular between the ages of 20-28, where many men toy around with the idea of growing out. Usually this results in facial hair today, gone tomorrow.
Of course, like everything in life, styles and trends do tend to change. And so it seems this also applies to a man and his furry face. Through the years moustaches have continuously evolved, as have the style of a man's beard, including it's shape, length and most recently, colour too.
So, whilst I'm not a huge supporter of labels and negative press against our face fuzz, I can understand how sometimes these tend to stick. I guess it's just part of how the world continues to turn. Times change and we, as a human race continue to roll with it, through the good, the bad and the damn right ugly.
